Lesson 6 — Production Structures (greenhouse, hoop house, shade)
Goal: choose and place structures that protect crop quality and extend your season.
Structure types
- Propagation room (barn build-out): high control, highest success.
- Greenhouse: controlled environment for weaning, early liners, winter protection.
- Hoop house: cheaper season extension; less control.
- Shade house: summer protection, reduces scorch, improves uniformity.
Placement rules
- Controlled structures near power + water + potting area.
- Orient to manage wind and sun exposure.
- Keep vehicle access for deliveries and repairs.
Do this
- Decide what needs “high control” vs “protection only.”
- Create a “structure map” for Year 1 and Year 5.
- Define the winter plan: what stays outside, what needs cover, what needs heat.
